The share of «mature companies» in Russia reached a record level in six years

MOSCOW, June 14 Business in Russia is maturing: the share of companies operating on the market for more than five years last year reached its highest level in six years 58.6%, this is largely due to the successful fight against one-day firms, according to a study by the consulting network FinExpertiza, which I read.
“Among economically active commercial companies, the share of mature enterprises older than five years reached a six-year high of 58.6% in 2022, up from 56.7% in 2021. In absolute terms, the number of such enterprises increased by 1.4% over the year. %, or by 21.6 thousand, to 1.52 million. In the previous four years, their number has been decreasing, although the share has been steadily growing,» the document says. At the same time, the total number of economically active enterprises in 2022, according to analysts, decreased by 2%, to 2.6 million.
«On the one hand, the reduction in the absolute number of operating companies is objectively related to the economic situation — although here it should also be taken into account that some enterprises are leaving the market as part of the FTS's fight against one-day firms and business fragmentation. On the other hand, the growth in the number of mature companies is very a positive indicator that testifies to the high adaptability of Russian business,” says Elena Trubnikova, President of FinExpertiza.

The share of young companies operating on the market for up to five years inclusive, on the contrary, decreased to a minimum of 41.4% in six years, the document says. In 2021, there were 43.3% of such businesses, and before the pandemic 2020, the share of young enterprises exceeded half. From 2017 to 2022, their number has halved — from 2.02 million to 1.07 million, that is, by 951 thousand companies (over the past year — by 6.3%, or by 72.6 thousand companies). For comparison, during the same period, only 14.5% of mature enterprises, or 257.4 thousand, ceased to conduct economic activities.

Among industries, there are especially many companies older than five years in real estate (76.8%), agriculture (74%), energy (70.8%), personal services (65.9%), as well as in finance and insurance ( 65%). Less than half of mature companies are registered only in the construction industry (48.4%).
In the regional context, most «age» companies operate in Komi (73.2%), Kaliningrad (72.9%), Arkhangelsk (71.4%), Volgograd (70.9%) and Vladimir regions (70.9% ), Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (70.4%), Bryansk (70.3%), Murmansk (70.3%), Sakhalin (69.4%), and Kostroma regions (69.1%). Minimum mature enterprises in Ingushetia (43.8%), Chechnya (46.2%), Buryatia (47.4%), Moscow (49.8%), Tatarstan (50.6%), Smolensk region (51.7%) %), Tyva (53.5%), Lipetsk region (53.7%), Kalmykia (54.1%) and Vologda region (55.1%).
The calculations are based on Rosstat business demography statistics, which takes into account commercial organizations registered in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities in all areas of the economy, except for the sphere of public administration, state and municipal unitary enterprises. The sample includes actually functioning enterprises whose turnover and average number of employees exceed zero.
