BBC staff strike in Cairo over wages

CAiro, Jun 14 BBC Office Staff Egypt's capital, Cairo, held a one-day strike on Wednesday to protest wage cuts, officials at the bureau said.
The crisis in relations between employees of the Cairo Bureau of the British Broadcasting Corporation and its leadership in London has been going on for two months now. His reason was the reduction in wages of journalists and other office staff due to the fall of the Egyptian pound.
The head of the Syndicate of Egyptian Journalists Khaled al-Balshi, as well as a member of this oldest professional organization in the country, Mohammed al-Ghar, joined the case.

«The syndicate intervened as a supportive party for colleagues in negotiations with the British Broadcasting Corporation to secure a fair demand from journalists for wage adjustments following the fall in the Egyptian pound,» said al-Ghar.

According to him, the Egyptian trade union of journalists (syndicate) filed a protest against the BBC leadership in connection with ignoring the depreciation of the Egyptian currency.
Employees of the BBC office in Cairo suspended work until Wednesday evening. The one-day strike is a first step, they say, that could escalate if the administration doesn't respond to demands for wage adjustments.
For its part, the International Federation of Journalists expressed support for the demands of the BBC's Cairo bureau.
The BBC has not yet commented on the situation with its Cairo bureau.

Since March 2021, the Egyptian pound has almost halved against the dollar. In December 2022, Egypt's annual inflation rate was 21.9%, a record for the first time since 2017.
