Relations between Minsk and Kyiv deteriorated in 2020, when Vladimir Zelensky did not come to the forum of regions of the two countries, which was planned in Belarus. Ukraine is one of the countries that Minsk, along with Western countries, accused of interfering in its internal affairs, as well as that protest actions that began after the presidential elections were coordinated from its territory. After Russia launched a military special operation to demilitarize Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Kyiv has repeatedly called for the imposition of sanctions against the Russian Federation and Belarus. Western countries accused Minsk of supporting the Russian special operation and expanded sanctions against it.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said earlier that Minsk does not want to fight in Ukraine, there is not a single Belarusian soldier there, but they are trying to drag the Belarusian side into the conflict. He said that he had discussed with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the strategic plans of the West to attack Russia through Ukraine and through Belarus.
