MOSCOW, 27 Jun. Archaeologists have found a lost Mayan city in the south of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, writes ScienceAlert.
It was called «Okomtun» («stone column»). To get to it, scientists walked 60 kilometers through the jungle. Experts found various buildings, including several pyramidal structures 15 meters high.
There is also a ball court, which may have been used for recreation or religious purposes. Some of the structures collapsed over time, so that the structures in the form of columns could earlier be the entrance to the premises.
We learned about the city thanks to modern technologies. Before going on an expedition, archaeologists scanned the area using lidar. This is a distance measurement technology that uses the reflection of laser beams from a surface. Without it, the buildings would have remained hidden to the human eye behind the trees.
Earlier it was reported that scientists had uncovered the secret of the strength of the Mayan buildings in Honduras.
