The last time Putin visited Dagestan was in September 2019. In those days, the republic recalled the events of 20 years ago — the invasion of terrorist gangs under the command of Shamil Basayev and Khattab from Chechnya. Then detachments of militiamen from among local residents came to the aid of the military.
The President of the Russian Federation visited the village of Botlikh, where he laid flowers at the memorial to those who died during the Great Patriotic War, during the hostilities in Afghanistan, in Dagestan in August-September 1999 and others armed confrontations. After that, the head of state met with the militias and fulfilled the promise he made 20 years ago — he drank a glass left untouched during a trip to Dagestan in August 1999.
