MOSCOW, July 3 Specialists of the Ural State Pedagogical University (Ural State Pedagogical University, Yekaterinburg) have come up with a method for obtaining high-strength metal alloys with desired properties, which is important from the point of view of import substitution of components, reported at the Russian Science Foundation (RSF).
The authors of the current work for the first time synthesized an alloy based on aluminum, nickel, cobalt, copper and zirconium, containing components in equal proportions. These metals are widely used in industry and give the alloy different properties — hardness, ductility, increase corrosion resistance. But most importantly, with the help of specially selected quenching conditions, it was possible to achieve the formation of the so-called amorphous state, in which the alloy lacks the crystalline structure characteristic of ordinary metals. In this state, the alloys acquire the best mechanical properties.

«The alloy obtained by us can be used as a material for various devices, such as electromagnetic sensors. <…> But even now it can be said that the formed structure of the alloy during rapid quenching can provide high levels of microhardness, strength and corrosion resistance,” said Boris Rusanov, head of the project supported by the Russian Science Foundation grant, senior researcher at the Ural State Pedagogical University.
In the near future, the team will begin to investigate the corrosion properties of alloys with different ratios of components. Scientists want to find out if they can be used in harsh environments such as sea water.
