Scientists have come to the conclusion that Yugra is waiting for a new ice age

MOSCOW, July 4 Russian scientists have presented new evidence of the future glaciation of Yugra. According to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, a group of researchers from the Nizhnevartovsk State University (NVSU) during a scientific expedition recorded on the territory of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Yugra (KhMAO-Yugra) traces of the activity of an ancient glacier, indicating that Yugra in the future is waiting for a repetition of the glacial script.
According to Sergey Korkin, head of the scientific laboratory for geoecological research at the Novosibirsk State University, the expedition members discovered crystalline solid rocks and minerals that are formed during magmatism. «They could not have been formed on the territory of Yugra in sedimentary rocks of the Quaternary age (2.5 million years), which means they got into the region from the outside,» the scientist said in an interview with a correspondent, adding that the study proves that the region was once the glacier has arrived.

At the same time, the scientist explained that from the scientific works of the classics of Russian geology it follows that glaciation in the Quaternary period occurred in several stages; after the glaciation, there was always a warm period, and then a cold snap again. «Now Yugra is going through a very warm interglacial period, but in the future the region will experience glaciation,» the scientist said.

Moreover, during the expedition, geoecologists discovered a two-layer moraine (an accumulation of rock fragments carried by glaciers), which indicates that in the past glaciers advanced and retreated twice in the region.
In addition, during the expedition, scientists found » desert», which is not typical for the taiga of Yugra.
«We found a desert area where a forest should grow. This trend is observed in connection with global warming, which may lead to an increase in areas of open sand that are not fixed by vegetation,» – the scientist explained.

The expedition to study the geological basis of landscapes took place in the area of the Kazym, Kuryeh and Sorum rivers (the eastern part of the Beloyarsky district of Yugra), as well as in the territory of the Numto natural park. In seven days, the researchers traveled 820 km along the Kazym River on a small boat, stopping off the coast to take soil samples for further research in the laboratory. According to scientists, the territory of the Kazym River valley is untouched by man, so unique natural phenomena and processes can be observed there. cold scenario».
«We have taken samples, but have not received the dating yet. When we get the dates, then we will be able to more clearly say when the last glaciation took place and when to expect the next one,» the scientist emphasized.

The study «Assessment of landscape transformation under climate change in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Yugra» was supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation and the government of Yugra.
According to Rosstat, the current population of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Yugra is 1,730,352 human.
