MOSCOW, 7 Jul. Giant 300,000-year-old stone axes have been found in Kent, England, writes Phys.org with reference to Internet Archeology.
Artifacts were found on a hillside above the Medway Valley in deep deposits dating back to the Ice Age.
According to archaeologist Letty Injray, ancient devices of this type are called giant when their length exceeds 22 centimeters. In Kent, two axes were found matching the range. The largest is 29.5 centimeters long.
«These axes are so bulky that it's hard to imagine how they could be used in everyday life. Perhaps they had another function. Not so much practical as symbolic — a demonstration of strength and skill,» explains Injray.
The expert admits that now scientists do not know why and what kind of ancient people created these huge tools.
In addition to giant axes, about 800 ancient artifacts have been found during excavations in the Medway Valley, as well as a cemetery from Roman times, where people were buried in the 1st-4th centuries AD. Scientists came across the remains of 25 people. 13 of them were cremated.
