Excellent pulp. In Russia, found a new prebiotic for animals

MOSCOW, 6 Jul. Scientists of DSTU proposed to use the waste of processing of essential oil plants as a useful additive to livestock feed. According to them, the economic benefit from this will amount to hundreds of millions of rubles a year. The results are published in Agriculture.
Prebiotics are substances that stimulate the growth of beneficial bifidus and lactobacilli in the intestines. Their presence in the microbiota of the body in the right quantities provides high immunity and resistance to stress, the scientists explained. /ria.ru/20220530/dgtu-1791111512.html» data->
According to experts, prebiotics are rarely used in animal husbandry today due to the lack of cost-effective sources for their production, but the need for them is high.

A team of scientists from the Don State Technical University (DSTU) has demonstrated that wastes from the processing of essential oil plants exhibit pronounced prebiotic activity and can be used as feed components.
“We studied plant waste from various agricultural industries in the south of Russia, and eventually found three crops at once, the cakes of which have high prebiotic properties,” said Dmitry Rudoy, Dean of the Agro-Industrial Faculty of the DSTU.

As the scientists explained, the processing wastes of mustard (Brassica juncea), camelina (Camelina sativa) and spike lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) enhance the acid-forming properties of lactic acid bacteria, thereby increasing the acidity of the intestinal environment. This leads to a decrease in the number of enterococci, Escherichia coli and lactose-positive bacteria, the excess of which is dangerous for the body. , according to DSTU scientists, are three selected plants. At the same time, most of the cake today is simply disposed of.
«When using at least 4,000 tons of oilcake of the crops we offer in compound feed, the direct economic benefit, according to our calculations, will amount to almost 1 billion rubles a year,» said Rudoy.

The study was conducted on a unique device that simulates the intestinal contents of various farm animals, which was developed by DSTU specialists in 2022.
In the future, the scientific team plans to continue the search for effective sources of prebiotics and develop new feed for livestock and fish farming.
< br />Research is carried out within the framework of a grant from the Government of the Russian Federation on the topic «Veterinary probiotic preparations for directed modulation of animal health». DSTU is a participant of the Priority-2030 state support program for Russian universities.
