An investigator from Chechnya interrogated Novaya Gazeta columnist Yelena Milashina in connection with her beating in Grozny. This is reported by the “Team against torture”.
The press service of the human rights project «Mediazone» specified that the interrogation took place in the editorial office of «Novaya Gazeta» in Moscow. Georgy Ivanov, lawyer of the Team Against Torture, also took part in it.
Milashina told the investigator that the attackers threatened to kill her if she came to Chechnya again. The lawyer representing the interests of the journalist petitioned to inspect the place where Novaya Gazeta columnist and lawyer Alexander Nemov were beaten. The journalist fears for her life if she appears in the republic, so she asked for state protection to participate in investigative actions.
Milashina and Nemov were severely beaten in Grozny on 4 July. In a hospital in Moscow, doctors diagnosed the journalist with a closed craniocerebral injury, fractures of the hands and bruises. She was hospitalized and discharged on June 12. Nemov had multiple hematomas and a stab wound.
The day after the attack, on July 5, the department of the Investigative Committee for Chechnya reported that a criminal case had been opened. The attack was qualified under articles on causing harm to health of medium and mild severity (points «d», «e», «h» of part 2 of article 112, points «a», «c» of part 2 of article 115 of the Criminal Code).
