NEW DELHI, Jul 20 The Government of India has banned the export of non-basmati white rice, according to a notice from the Foreign Trade Directorate General.
“The export policy for non-basmati white rice (semi-milled or whole-milled rice, polished or unglazed)…changed from free to prohibited,” the agency said in a notice.
However, the Authority noted that this would allow shipments of this rice to be exported under certain conditions, for example, in cases where the loading of this rice onto the ship began before the adoption of this notification.
Earlier, Bloomberg wrote that the Indian government is considering a ban on the export of most varieties of rice. The ban could affect about 80% of rice exports from India, could lead to a decrease in rice prices in India, but negatively affect world market prices, the material specified.
Earlier, Indian media reported that the uneven distribution of rainfall in key rice-growing regions of the country led to an increase in grain prices in the domestic market by up to 20% over the past 10 days.
