MOSCOW, Jul 23— . The Lenin Mausoleum is one of the most famous in the world: millions of tourists come to see the embalmed body of the leader of the revolution. However, this is not the only such structure. The history of the famous tombs is in the material.
Pirogov's tomb in Vinnitsa: the sad fate of the first Russian mausoleum
The creator of field surgery, the outstanding physician Nikolai Pirogov, died in 1881 in the village of Vishnya near Vinnitsa (Russian Empire). The body was embalmed (the procedure lasted four hours) and exhibited in a glass sarcophagus in the tomb on his estate. Later, a temple was erected there, which the locals called the mausoleum.
The first looting happened in the late 1920s — thieves stole Pirogov's nominal sword and pectoral cross. The intruders broke the tightness of the glass sarcophagus, and the body began to collapse. The situation was saved by specialists from Moscow, who embalmed Lenin, although the remains of the doctor were conserved according to a different recipe invented by the surgeon himself. =»photo» data-crop-ratio=»0.75″ data-crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»450″ data-source-sid=»cc_by-sa_40″ class=»lazyload» width=» 1920″ height=»1440″ decoding=»async» />
During the Soviet period of Ukraine's history and several years of its independence, Pirogov's body was monitored by scientists from a Moscow laboratory. But after 2014, the Kyiv authorities banned them from entering the mausoleum.
There were rumors that they were ready to agree on reembalming with Moscow, but things did not go beyond words.
Nothing is known today about the fate of the «first Russian mausoleum». However, even before the special operation, Kiev did not allocate enough funds to maintain the temple with the tomb.
Kotovsky Mausoleum in Ukraine: body to the ground, building to be demolished
Probably, Pirogov's tomb is waiting for the same fate as the mausoleum of the revolutionary Grigory Kotovsky in Podolsk, Odessa region.
The hero of the Civil War died in 1925, his body was embalmed by Moscow experts.
The Romanian occupiers destroyed the tomb in the Great Patriotic War, abused the remains of Kotovsky and threw them into a trench along with the corpses of the executed. But the workers of the local depot reburied the dead, and the body of the revolutionary was kept in a simple bag.
In 1965, the mausoleum was restored, albeit in a reduced form. The remains of Kotovsky were placed in a zinc coffin with a window. Access to it was open.
In 2016, the local Ukrainian authorities decided to demolish the tomb and bury the body. However, according to the laws of the country, this is impossible — the revolutionary has relatives who must give permission. They all live in Russia.
Dimitrov's Mausoleum in Bulgaria: to bury the leader
Georgy Dimitrov — revolutionary and head of the communist «Sixteenth Republic» of the USSR. They called him the Bulgarian Lenin. After his death in 1949, his body was embalmed and placed in a mausoleum.
The building with columns stood on the square of the Bulgarian Prince Alexander I in Sofia.
After the fall of the socialist regime, the communist party (supposedly on the initiative of Dimitrov's relatives) decided to rebury the revolutionary. He was cremated, the ashes are now resting in the capital's central cemetery in the grave of the leader's mother.
The mausoleum was demolished in 1999. The tomb was blown up only on the fifth attempt.
Lenin, Kims, Mao and Shi Ming: imperishable bodies are indestructible mausoleums
Not all stories of mausoleums are so sad. In Russia, they periodically talk about the burial of the body of the leader of the revolution, but there is no talk of demolishing the architectural masterpiece of Shchusev.
In Hanoi, since 1975, there is a whole museum memorial dedicated to the first president of independent Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh. The complex also includes a mausoleum. Visiting is allowed.
By the way, experts from the Asian state a few years before the death of the leader came to Moscow to learn the embalming procedure. Ho Chi Minh himself wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered over the country. crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»498″ data-source-sid=»afp» class=»lazyload» width=»1920″ height=»1593″ decoding=»async» />
The memorial also includes the house of the first president and a museum.
In China, there is a mausoleum of Mao Zedong. It was erected for a year and a half — from November 1976 to May 1977, and opened to the public in 1979. The building has ten rooms dedicated to the PRC leader. ight=»338″ data-source-sid=»rian_photo» class=»» />

In North Korea, the bodies of Kim Il Sung and his son Kim Jong Il were embalmed. The remains of the leaders were placed in the building that was the residence of the first leader of the DPRK.
