BUENOS AIRES Aug 10 Argentina joining BRICS will be depend on the results of the presidential elections in this Latin American country, said the Argentine international analyst Cristian Lamesa.
On Sunday, August 13, primaries will be held in Argentina, where citizens will be able to determine future presidential candidates. Despite the fact that over 20 people put forward their candidacies, the main struggle will unfold between four politicians. They are Sergio Massa, the current economy minister and candidate of the ruling Union for the Motherland coalition, and opposition politicians — former security minister Patricia Bullrich, Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Larreta and MP and economist Javier Miley from the Libertarian Party. The presidential elections themselves will take place on October 22.
«The intention to join the BRICS will continue if Massa wins,» Lamesa said.
“On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised if Larreta went down this road. This is a 50-50 opportunity. Because Massa and Larreta are similar in their views, deep down. he continued this path, and would not leave it, as Miley and Bullrich would have done,» the expert noted.
In 2022, BRICS announced that it would expand the number of member countries to make the organization more inclusive. A number of states have already expressed their desire to join the economic bloc, including Argentina, Iran, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. As the Ambassador of South Africa in Moscow, Mzuvukile Maketuka, said in an interview, all the countries of the association welcome expansion, but it is necessary to determine the modalities for the admission of new members, and this issue should be decided collectively.
