According to the Al Arabiya television channel, the delegation of the Economic Community of West African Nations (ECOWAS) has not been successful in negotiations with the military that has seized power in Niger and is leaving the country.
Sources the delegation said: «ECOWAS delegation leaves Niger after the failure of negotiations with the military council.» It is clarified that «the military council rejected the demands of ECOWAS for the return of the deposed President Bazuma.»
The TV channel also mentions that the delegation met with General Abdurahman Tchiani, head of the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland, Prime Minister for the Transitional Period Ali Mahamane Lamin Zein and deposed head of state Mohamed Bazum.
In late July, the Niger military announced the removal of President Bazum from power. Western and ECOWAS leaders condemned the putsch. ECOWAS members developed a plan in case of a possible military intervention in Niger and declared their readiness for a military invasion in case of failure of negotiations with the rebels.
