MOSCOW, August 26 Poppy is grown in the Bryansk region to ensure the drug safety of the Russian Federation and the needs of the food industry, the project is being implemented by FSUE Endopharm together with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, press reports — service of the government of the Bryansk region.
«This crop has a dual purpose — ensuring the drug safety of our country (poppy is used for the production of painkillers) and the needs of the food industry,» the press service said.
It is reported that the decision to grow poppies in the Bryansk region was made two years ago. This year's harvest on the fields of the enterprise where poppy is grown was assessed by representatives of the delegation of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, headed by Dmitry Galkin, Director of the Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry Development Department, Mikhail Fonarev, Director General of FSUE Endopharm, and Alexander Bogomaz, Governor of the Bryansk Region.
«Last year, 400 hectares of poppy seeds were sown, this year — already 2,000 hectares, the same amount has been prepared for next year's sown areas, and the expected harvest this year is 500 kilograms of edible poppy seeds per hectare. This is an achievement of the Moscow endocrine plant in Bryansk land. In Europe, they receive 700 kg per hectare, and I am sure we will succeed even more, we are only at the beginning of the journey,» the press service quoted Bogomaz as saying.
In October last year, Bogomaz announced that the first poppy crop in the post-Soviet space for the production of pharmaceuticals was harvested in the Bryansk region.
