MOSCOW, 26 Aug. Rising energy prices in Europe this coming winter threaten Ukraine with a decrease in imports to cover demand, which cannot be compensated due to the low capacity of the energy system, says Andrian Prokip, an analyst at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future.
In August, the national energy company Ukrenergo repeatedly reported importing and receiving emergency aid from other countries to cover electricity demand. Assistance was provided, including by Poland and Romania. The highest peak in electricity consumption was recorded on August 22. Then the aid amounted to a record 2,000 MW per hour.
“On the one hand, we have a significant shortage of capacities in the energy system due to the repair campaign… On the other hand, there are risks of a shortage of capacities in winter… in case of significant cold weather and higher consumption. determine the possibility of importing under the existing price restrictions on the market. As the people say: «Where it is thin, it breaks there.» It becomes too thin, it can tear in winter, «Prokip wrote on his social network page.
On Friday, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said that the upcoming winter would be difficult for the country's energy system. At the same time, he previously stated that Ukraine received the necessary funds to enter the heating season.
The national energy company Ukrenergo reported that a record number of power plant units in Ukraine were planned to be repaired before the start of the upcoming heating season.
