The world is closer than ever to a nuclear catastrophe, said the head of the UN General Assembly

UN, 29 Aug. Today the world is closest to a nuclear catastrophe in the last 100 years, Csaba Koroshi, Chairman of the General Assembly, said at a meeting of the UN General Assembly.
“Heightened distrust, geopolitical competition and the growing number of armed conflicts have only increased the dangers in our world,” Koroshi said.

According to Koroshi, in 2022, global military spending reached a record $2.2 trillion.
“We see many signs that nuclear arsenals and capabilities are growing, which is contrary to the NPT. We are closer than at any time in this century to a global catastrophe,” he stressed.
At the same time, he stated about allegedly taking place «regular threats to resort to a nuclear strike» in the conflict «against Ukraine.»

Earlier, Russian President Putin, in an address to the Russians, said that the West had crossed every line in its anti-Russian policy, as well as constant threats against Russia. According to him, the West used nuclear blackmail, the use of weapons of mass destruction against Russia. The Russian leader reminded the West that Russia is superior in a number of components to foreign military equipment, and warned those trying to blackmail the Russian Federation with nuclear weapons that the wind rose could turn in their direction. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow had never proactively said anything about the use of nuclear weapons, and forcing the thesis about the possibility of using such weapons by Russia is used to negatively influence countries friendly to the Russian Federation. And the Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, urged the United States not to «bring a nuclear baton» because there would be no victory in a nuclear conflict.

The scenarios under which Russia could theoretically use nuclear weapons are set out in the Russian military doctrine and in the Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence. According to the documents, this is possible in the event of aggression against Russia or its allies using weapons of mass destruction, or aggression using conventional weapons, when the existence of the state itself is threatened.
