MOSCOW, 31 Aug. Ukraine itself must determine within what borders it will join NATO, but they must be stable, said the representative of the Czech Republic in the alliance, Jakub Landovsky. He was quoted by Bloomberg.
“Instability and hostility must end. <…> But in the end, the only party responsible for answering the question of where the border should go is Ukraine,” the official said.< br>In his opinion, Kiev will be able to join the North Atlantic Alliance when the hostilities are over and Ukraine's borders are stabilized. At the same time, according to the representative of the Czech Republic, a full-fledged peace agreement with Moscow is not included in the necessary conditions for membership in NATO.
An important criterion will be whether the Eastern European country will be able to contribute to the security of the military association, Landovsky specified.
In mid-August, the head of the office of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Stian Jensen, said that Ukraine would be allowed to join the organization in exchange for the cession of territories to Russia. According to him, this issue has already been discussed in NATO. But later he retracted his statement, calling it a mistake.
According to the results of the summit in Vilnius on July 11-12, Ukraine did not receive an invitation to join the bloc. Moreover, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that this issue will lose relevance if Kiev fails to win the confrontation with Russia.
The G7 countries have published a declaration in support of Ukraine, but the security commitments mentioned in it do not provide for specific deadlines for implementation. As emphasized in the Russian Foreign Ministry, NATO has finally returned to the Cold War schemes, and Kyiv is destined for the role of the main expendable material in the hybrid war unleashed by the alliance.
