Dmitry Muratov will leave the post of editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta during the trial, in which he will challenge his inclusion in the register of “foreign agents”. This was reported in a mailing to Novaya Gazeta subscribers, the text of which is quoted by Novaya Gazeta Europe.
The Ministry of Justice declared Muratov a “foreign agent” last Friday, September 1.
“Muratov categorically disagrees with the decision of the Ministry of Justice and is suing. At his request, the editorial office suspends Dmitry Muratov's functions as editor-in-chief for the duration of the trial, ”the mailing says.
Journalist Sergei Sokolov has become interim acting editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta.
In October 2021, Dmitry Muratov received the Nobel Prize “for his efforts to protect freedom of speech, which creates the conditions for the existence of democracy and the maintenance of peace.” In the summer of 2022, he sold his Nobel medal at an auction for $103.5 million, and donated the proceeds to help Ukrainian refugees.
