Volkswagen ID.X Performance: a harbinger of the “charged” ID.7 liftback presented

Soon the German manufacturer will present a serial “warmed up” version of the five-door, which will be named Volkswagen ID.7 GTX. For now, the manufacturer is teasing fans of the brand with another hot concept.

The VW brand does not skimp on concepts, one way or another related to the ID.7 model. So, in 2018, the Germans showed the first harbinger of the production model — the ID.Vizzion show car. In 2022, a new prototype appeared, closer to the commercial version — ID.Aero. And in April of this year, the serial liftback ID.7 debuted (and the Chinese version has two appearance options).

It was immediately known that the model would have a “charged” version: teasers of the five-door with the addition of GTX to the name were published back in May. This product modification will likely be declassified in the near future. However, this did not stop the manufacturer from presenting another “hot” concept based on the base ID.7: we are talking about the Volkswagen ID.X Performance, which debuted as part of a special event in Locarno (Switzerland).

The show car has a number of visual differences from the standard Volkswagen ID.7. In particular, the ID.X Performance received other front and rear bumpers, revealing the aggressive character of the five-door, glossy black wheel arch trims, as well as side skirts and an impressive carbon wing mounted on the edge of the tailgate.

Another “hot” concept received forged 20-inch rollers shod in low-profile Michelin tires. Also on the list of differences between this electric car and a standard liftback is the suspension, which the developers lowered by 60 mm. The interior of the sport version is standard, differing only due to the contrasting red decor.

The Volkswagen ID.X Performance has all-wheel drive and a dual-motor powertrain (one electric motor on each axle). The system consists of a synchronous DC motor on the rear axle, working in tandem with an asynchronous motor located on the front axle. The total power of the installation is 558 hp. For comparison, the European version of the “regular” ID.7 has one electric motor located on the rear axle and produces 286 hp.

The company has not yet talked about the batteries of the charged liftback. It is possible that the batteries in the production version, which will be based on the ID.X Performance show car, will be the same as those in the regular Volkswagen ID.7. Let us remind you that the old-world version will be offered with two versions to choose from: the capacity is either 82 or 91 kWh. In the first case, the range on one charge is about 615 km, in the second – about 700 km (according to the WLTP cycle).

Recall that last summer it became known that Volkswagen had to temporarily shut down several factories due to weak demand. In particular, because of this, it was decided to postpone the start of production of the ID.7 electric liftback to the end of this year, although the serial launch was originally scheduled for July. The model will be put on the assembly line of a plant located in Emden (Germany), where the ID.4 crossover is currently being produced. The manufacturer has also reduced the staff of the specified enterprise.
