RuStore has become mandatory for pre-installation on electronic devices sold in Russia from January 1, 2023. The domestic application store was launched in May 2022. It was developed on behalf of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and its creation was carried out by VK together with the largest Russian IT companies with the support of the Ministry of Digital Development.
“In general, supply chain attacks, of course, exist. But I would not say that the filtering system that Google or Apple have and had is much better than the filtering system that RuStore has Applications don’t just end up there, they also undergo a certain moderation and control,” Sychev said on the sidelines of the EEF.
Currently, RuStore is available only to users of the Android operating system (OS), but VK stated that it is considering the possibility of adapting the application for iOS devices, and also that it plans to adapt it to the domestic Aurora OS by the end of 2023. The head of the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation, Maksut Shadayev, told reporters last week that the ministry plans to negotiate with smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Russian application store RuStore directly at factories — this will help get rid of price increases for smartphones and preserve the warranty for devices.
