A source from the Kommersant newspaper confirmed the authenticity of photographs with General Sergei Surovikin, which were published on Friday in the telegram channel of military analyst Boris Rozhin. The publication indicates that its source belongs to “the military leader’s entourage.”
According to the newspaper’s interlocutor, Surovikin is indeed now in Algeria as part of the delegation of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The insider linked the purpose of the trip with that that “the military-political leadership of the country attaches great importance” to the implementation of foreign policy in the “eastern direction.” The source also said that Surovikin’s trip confirms that he “remains trusted at the highest level,” and that the business trip may be connected “with his possible appointment to a position” in the specified “eastern direction.”
Previously Member of the State Duma Defense Committee Viktor Zavarzin said that the general received a new position, which is related to the CIS. Later, publications appeared in the media indicating a specific post, but the Ministry of Defense did not comment on these messages.
