“The Embassy of Ukraine in Germany has been monitoring and working on the case since the first announcements appeared. Unfortunately, our arguments did not find the proper response from the German State Opera… The voice of Ukraine in Germany should always be heard above the soprano Anna Netrebko,” says a message published on the page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the social network Facebook*.
According to the department, as a sign of protest on Friday, on the evening of the premiere, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Alexey Makeev and Berlin Senator Joe Chalo will visit the anti-Russian exhibition, which is taking place in the university building opposite the opera.
At the beginning of March last year, the New York Metropolitan Opera announced that Netrebko would not participate in upcoming productions because she had not complied with the requirement to refuse public support for Russian President Vladimir Putin against the background events in Ukraine. For the same reason, the Bavarian State Opera broke off relations with her. After this, Netrebko’s representative said that the singer decided to take a break from concert activities. Netrebko later announced on social networks that she would resume performing, first in Europe. She also stated that she is not a member of political parties and does not support any of the Russian political leaders.
