ST. PETERSBURG, September 28 The Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad, thanks to the implementation of the concept of its development, will become a scientific and educational center on an all-Russian scale, reported in its Telegram- channel, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Piotrovsky.
“»At the Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad, a development concept was presented — it was developed on behalf of the President of Russia. According to the plan, the Salt Town will acquire its historical appearance, and the museum should turn into a large scientific and educational center of a national scale,» he wrote .
As Piotrovsky clarified, the area of the museum complex will be expanded. The historical complex will house permanent and temporary exhibitions, a storage facility and restoration unit, a specialized library, an institute for the history of the defense and siege of Leningrad, an educational center, a youth media center and a theater venue.
In January, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov reported that the State Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad would expand and develop with constant updating of exhibitions.
The siege of Leningrad, which began on September 8, 1941, lasted almost 900 days. The only route — the «Road of Life» — along which food was delivered to the city was laid across the ice of Lake Ladoga. The blockade was broken on January 18, 1943, but Leningraders had to wait another whole year before it was completely lifted — January 27, 1944.
In October 2022, the St. Petersburg City Court recognized the actions of the Nazis during the siege of Leningrad as a war crime and genocide of the Soviet people. The materials collected by the city prosecutor's office allow us to judge that the number of victims of the blockade was at least 1,093,842 people. The damage caused by the Nazis and their accomplices to Leningrad and its residents is estimated at 35.3 trillion rubles at the current exchange rate, the prosecutor's office calculated.
