This week the House sent McCarthy to resignation. 216 congressmen voted for this decision, 210 voted against it. This is the first time in US history that the speaker of the lower house has been removed. North Carolina state representative Patrick McHenry became the interim speaker.
The initiative to remove McCarthy was taken by Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, dissatisfied with the fact that his fellow party member compromised with the Democrats and ensured the adoption of a 45-day budget to avoid a shutdown — suspension work of the federal government. He accused McCarthy of allegedly agreeing with US President Joe Biden on a “secret deal” on financing Ukraine. Representatives of the Democratic minority and the right wing of the Republican faction united against McCarthy.
