PARIS, October 13 A man with a knife attacked schoolchildren at a lyceum in northern France, killing a teacher, BFMTV channel reports.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Gambetta Lyceum in the city of Arras in the Pas-de-Calais department. According to the TV channel, the teacher died on the spot from knife wounds. Several more people were injured.
According to a police source, during the attack the attacker shouted: “Allahu Akbar!”
Later, the head of the French Ministry of Internal Affairs, Gerald Damanen, said that the attacker had been detained. He turned out to be a 20-year-old native of Chechnya. According to BFMTV, he is on the list of persons posing a threat to state security. His brother was detained at another school; no weapons were found on him.
The murdered teacher taught literature. Another teacher (he is now in intensive care) and a security guard (his condition is assessed as critical) were seriously injured. None of the schoolchildren were injured.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Education Minister Gabriel Attal went to the scene. Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne has canceled her trip to Orleans and is returning to Paris. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation.
