WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 Republican members of the US House of Representatives parties have reached an impasse trying to decide on a candidate for the post of speaker of the Legislative Assembly, said Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
“I think everything has reached a dead end. It’s a waste of time to continue to go behind closed doors,” she told reporters when asked whether Republicans had decided on a candidate for speaker in internal discussions.
Green also proposed moving this “battle” to the entire House of Representatives. “I guess we need to start voting,” she added.
Earlier, a source in Congress said that Republicans will not hold elections for the speaker of the US House of Representatives until a candidate is identified who is supported by more than half of the legislators.
Republicans in the House of Representatives nominated Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise for the post of Speaker — the third most important in the US government hierarchy. At the same time, only 113 party members voted for his candidacy, 99 were against. For the election to take place, more than half of the legislators must vote for the nominee — 221 Republicans and 212 Democrats sit in the lower house of Congress, who are expected to support a member of their party.
Thus, the House of Representatives, which has been on recess for a week after the resignation of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, will not be able to continue working until a clear favorite in the fight for the post is determined.
