Daria Moroz: “There is a lot of humor in my series about sex”

MOSCOW, September 20, Anastasia Silkina. Daria Moroz's directorial debut — the sketch «Sex. Before and After» — was appreciated by both critics and viewers of the online cinema festival «New Season»: second place in the «Most Anticipated Series» category. And the artist herself was recognized as the opening of the show. She spoke about her new role, provocations and family support in an interview.

About the series: make it flirty, but without a hint of vulgarity

— Daria, your “Sex. Before and After” (online cinema Okko) was discussed by everyone at the festival. How to make a series with such a provocative title so intelligent?

— This was the main task for me. The greatest thrill is when such a provocative topic is developed in dialogue subtly, passionately, intelligently, flirtatiously, but without a hint of vulgarity. When I asked the general producer of the project, Slava Dusmukhametov, what this story was about, he told me: “It’s about the fact that sex is not the main thing in our lives.” It was the human component that interested me, not the provocative component, and we began negotiations.
The line of taste between subtle humor and vulgarity is quite clear to me. My parents are students of Gerasimov. I grew up watching good cinema and if I do something in this area, I want it to be at a high level.

— The series contains references to common jokes about sex. Weren't you afraid to joke like that?

— No, this is a genre sketch story. And then, jokes grow out of reality, and humor often saves a situation or relationship. This is very important in our life. I tried to keep in the script and come up with as many funny and recognizable moments as possible along the way, together with the authors.
The artists happily picked up on this, suggested cool lines or moves, and there was a lot of improvisation.

About directing: “I only consulted with my dad”

— When starting your first directorial work, did you consult with a professional? Maybe with his father, Yuri Moroz?

— Of course! I only consulted with my dad. For me, my father is an absolute guide in the profession and the most important teacher. I remember in the middle of the first shift I called him and said: “Dad, I’m tired, and I’m still filming and filming. How can you stand it for so many years?” He answered with his usual humor: “Daughter, you’ll get used to it by the tenth picture.”

Directing requires a hundred times more energy and strength than the acting profession! You spend 14 hours on site because you arrive early and leave later.

— Did your father reveal any creative secrets?

—He has his own editing principle, which he taught me. Dad was the first to see the collected material and said what he thought. I took advantage of some of his ideas and comments.
— In the series you also play one of the heroines. Was it difficult to switch?
— It’s monstrously difficult. I’m the kind of artist who runs to the monitor all the time — this is the only way I understand how what I did in the take is reflected in the frame.
But this time it was the last thing on my mind. You need to be in the frame at the same time, speak a ton of text, remain a good partner and at the same time look at the artist like a director, remember during the process the tasks that need to be clarified with him before the next take, immediately run to the monitor — check the frame and a hundred little things .

I regretted a hundred times that I agreed to play in my own film. These were the most difficult moments of the filming period, which overall was absolutely magical for me.
And I can’t say that director Moroz is happy with the result of the artist Moroz’s work.

About plans: write a script and sit in the director’s chair again

— Do you see yourself in the director’s chair in the future?

— Yes, definitely. The production team provided excellent production conditions. It turned out to be a very happy experience, which is important in principle, but for a debut director it is multiplied by ten.
— Be a screenwriter?
— For example. I work a lot with texts in production, this is one of my favorite processes — developing an idea, or a “letter” as I say. It is necessary that the script is ready and worked out as much as possible before the shooting period.

— You made your debut successfully at the New Season online cinema festival. How do you feel about competitions in general?
— Firstly, it’s a great honor to win the “Opening of the New Season” category, because this award is awarded by the organizers of the festival — general producers of leading online platforms.
Secondly, in the end, all film studios, television, online cinemas — we all want one thing: for the industry to develop. Any film festival is, first of all, not a competition, but an opportunity to see what was filmed over the past year and communicate with colleagues and friends.
And, of course, the one who is accepted by the viewer wins. There is a huge amount of content now; you can drown in such a stream. This is great! This is why we work, to be serious, to leave our mark on the history of cinema.

— Your daughter Anna is already a teenager. Would you like her to continue her acting or directing dynasty?
— She is super creative: she sings beautifully, moves wonderfully, writes lyrics, draws amazingly. My friends and Kostya’s friends periodically want to buy her pictures (director Konstantin Bogomolov, Daria’s ex-husband — Ed.). She also has a very tenacious mind, excellent results in mathematics, biology, physics and everything that is a dark forest for me. For some time she went to auditions, she wanted to try herself in this. But it seems to me that she is so much smarter and subtler that she will choose something more global than the acting profession.
