VLADIVOSTOK, October 16 A representative of the Department of Industrial Policy of Chukotka, in connection with media reports, explained that the study of the issue of energy supply to consumers of the district using new floating nuclear power units (FNPP) is at an early stage.
The Kommersant publication wrote on Monday that Rosatom may install another floating nuclear power plant in Chukotka due to growing demand from industrial electricity consumers. The state corporation noted to the publication that the development of the task is at a very early stage, and no decision has been made on implementing the project.
“There was no request from the government (to Rosatom), there was a memorandum. The document confirms the mutual understanding between the parties on the need to ensure the socio-economic development of the region and the effective development of mineral resources of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, the possibility of organizing work on energy supply to consumers of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug using floating nuclear power units, as well as the importance of reducing emissions of harmful and toxic substances into the Arctic atmosphere. This, roughly speaking, is working on the issue at the initial stage,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
The floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP) based on the Akademik Lomonosov nuclear power unit is based in the city of Pevek, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, it was connected to the network on December 19, 2019, and at the end of May 2020 into industrial operation. At the end of June, the station provided the first heat to consumers in Chukotka.
