MOSCOW, October 19 The research center “Artificial Intelligence in Pharma” will appear on the basis of Sechenov University; it will develop technological solutions using artificial intelligence methods that will help speed up development and the introduction of new drugs to the market, the press service of Sechenov University reported.
“Taking into account the university’s many years of experience and competencies in the field of drug development and close interaction with the leaders of the Russian pharmaceutical industry, the First Moscow State Medical University decided to create a research center “Artificial Intelligence in Pharma.” In partnership with the V.P. Ivannikov Institute of System Programming of the Russian Federation Academy of Sciences (ISP RAS) and in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies at the center will begin to develop digital solutions using artificial intelligence,” the message says.
The main goal of the center is to accelerate the development and introduction of new drugs to the market, the press service explained. A team of IT specialists, together with scientists from the Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, will develop a set of technological solutions using artificial intelligence methods that will help significantly reduce certain stages of drug development.
As a rule, the development of an innovative drug can take a long time — 10-15 years, and the cost of creating such drugs today is estimated at 2-2.5 billion dollars, the university noted.
However, if in the process of drug development we shift part of the routine work with big data, which is performed by specialists, to artificial intelligence, then we can significantly reduce the time of some stages of development and minimize the number of errors that may arise during such work due to the human factor, he specified Director of the Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology of the First Moscow State Medical University Vadim Tarasov.
According to him, as a result, new high-quality safe drugs — both generics and, in the future, original drugs — will enter the market faster.
For the effective operation of the new center, Sechenov University already has all the necessary base — a team of specialists in the field of creating information and telemedicine systems, scientists with extensive experience in drug development, as well as modern infrastructure and industrial partners, the press service added.
