MOSCOW, Oct. 19 Paleontologists have discovered a previously unknown species of ancient alligator that lived during the Ice Age, follows from ministry data natural resources and environment of Thailand.
The fossilized remains of an alligator were reported to have been found in 2005 in the Non Sung district of Nakhon Ratchasima province in northeastern Thailand. For 13 years, a joint team of Thai and German scientists examined the skeleton and came to the conclusion that it was a new species of ancient alligator. It was named Alligator munensis (Moon River alligator) after the river near which the remains were discovered.
According to the results of a study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports, this species of alligator could have existed approximately 230 thousand years ago — during the Middle Pleistocene era, which is also called the Ice Age.
