The New York Times, citing experts, said that Scythian gold discovered in Spain may be a fake. MK spoke with the director of the Naples Scythian museum-reserve Yuri Zaitsev and learned that these forgeries were discovered 15 years ago.
— It was about 15 years ago, my colleague and I were asked to conduct an examination of valuables by the Kiev “Rodovid-Bank”. He either kept them or took them as collateral. We immediately realized that it was a fake. I definitely saw some of the most striking jewelry found now back then. These values are “rehash” of famous finds.
— I can’t vouch for this moment, but at one time an odious collection called “Platar” was collected in Kyiv. This collection consisted of a very large number of antiquities and artifacts. Some of them were real, and some were fakes. There were a lot of questionable things there that were obviously fake. But I don’t remember exactly the ones that the Spanish police found. This collection was exhibited in Kyiv, and was taken to Poland and America. Perhaps there was something similar to these decorations there, but I can’t vouch for it.
— A fake is always clearly visible. Firstly, these are the plots. They are copied from the famous pectoral from the Tolstaya Mogila mound. The fact is that in ancient times things were not made serially, each was absolutely original. Of course, they could be repeated, but they were always executed differently. Here they are simply copied. It can be seen that a pectoral from the Taman Peninsula was also used as a sample. These two real pectorals are practically not similar to each other. It is clear that they were made by almost the same master, but they are completely different. And those who found them only imitate them.
Secondly, the condition of the gold. Gold is never that bright; it needs to be rubbed until it shines. But ancient gold is always darkened somewhere; it is never so bright and pure. There are still a large number of nuances, but it will be difficult for an ordinary person to understand them.
This cost can be taken out of thin air. Someone told them and that's it. They could name a million, or a hundred million. The same things are not sold in stores.
In order to create such a product, even a fake one, you need a high level of skill. This must be a fairly high-class jeweler.
