The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel and the release of the hostages. Its draft was introduced on October 26 by Jordan (.pdf), and was joined by 40 countries, including Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
Although the authors of the resolution at the beginning “condemn all acts of violence against Palestinians and civilians,” a large part of the document is devoted to criticism of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. Canada tried (.pdf) to add a paragraph to the text condemning Hamas attacks and the taking of prisoners; its amendment did not receive the required number of votes.
Representatives of 120 countries voted “for”, 14 voted “against”, including Israel itself , USA, Austria and Czech Republic. 45 countries abstained.
