“»The time has come to take the next step and invite Ukraine to NATO. We need a new European security architecture in which Ukraine will be in the very heart of NATO,” he said.
According to Rasmussen, the question of Kiev’s membership cannot be postponed until next year. At the same time, the exclusion of territories controlled by Russia from the North Atlantic Alliance will reduce the threat of conflict with it, the former secretary general of the military bloc believes. According to the ex-official, Ukraine's accession to NATO does not necessarily mean a freeze in hostilities.
According to media reports, on the eve of the next alliance summit, discussions are underway about attracting military specialists to study issues related to the Eastern European country's membership in the military alliance . In particular, the problem of demarcating the front line is discussed in such a way as to show where in Ukraine the territory considered part of the North Atlantic Alliance may begin, as specified in the publication.
Following the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12, Ukraine did not receive an invitation to the military bloc. Moreover, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that this issue will lose relevance if the Kiev regime fails to win the confrontation with Russia.
The G7 countries published a declaration in support of Ukraine, but the security commitments mentioned in it do not include specific deadlines for implementation.
