The SBU opened a case against ex-member of the Rada Irina Farion; after her post in Crimea, a student supporting Ukraine was detained

The Security Service of Ukraine opened a criminal case against Irina Farion, a philologist and ex-deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the nationalist Svoboda party, who advocates a complete rejection of the use of the Russian language in Ukraine.

According to a press release from the security service, production was opened due to two events. In an interview released on November 4, Farion said that she does not consider those who speak Russian rather than Ukrainian, including Russian-speaking military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to be Ukrainians.

A few days later, in response to criticism, Farion posted on Telegram a screenshot of an email from a student from annexed Crimea in her support. The name of the author, Maxim Glebov, was visible on the screen, and the letter mentioned other details about him — including that he was studying in Simferopol in his first year of Ukrainian philology.

Student Glebov’s letter to Irina Farion ended with the words: “I know, Ukraine will defeat rush. I know, Mova will triumph over language«. Employees of the Center for Combating Extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs soon detained him, and the Telegram channel of blogger-informer Alexander Talipov “Crimean Smersh” posted a video with the freshman’s apology.

The case against Farion was initiated under four articles — about “violation of the equality of citizens” (161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), about insulting military personnel (435-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), about violation of the secrecy of correspondence and privacy (Articles 163 and 182 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
