MOSCOW, November 21 Fluctuations in the water level in the Caspian Sea are cyclical, according to one forecast, it may begin to rise again by the end of the 21st century, said the head of Rosvodresursov Dmitry Kirillov.
“»As for the Caspian Sea, we understand that there is a certain problem associated with climate change — a decrease in precipitation, snow reserves, and so on. On the other hand, from a historical perspective, we observe a cyclical trend in sea water content… Forecasts are different, one of them says that by the end of the century the water level in the sea will begin to rise again,” Kirillov said on the sidelines of the Russia International Exhibition and Forum.
The head of Rosvodresursov recalled that the Caspian Sea was already in a stage of low water in the 1930-1970s, after which the level began to rise. From 1998-2000 the level went down again.
«Of course, people cannot influence the decrease in water availability overnight. But it is during such a period that the issue of caring for water and saving water resources becomes the highest priority,» Kirillov added.
According to him, for this purpose, programs are being implemented for water conservation, the introduction of re-sequential and recycling water supply to production, and the reduction of losses in agriculture, the industry where the most water is wasted.
