Scientists have identified problems in communication between doctors and patients

MOSCOW, December 8 Problem areas in the field of communication between doctors and patients were studied by specialists from Siberian State Medical University. As the university press service reported, they were able to identify about 20 of the most important areas of interaction, which could subsequently become the basis of a special training course.
According to experts, communication skills are just as important for a doctor as mastery of professional medical procedures and clinical thinking. They are important for collecting information, dialogue and understanding the patient’s point of view, exchanging opinions, and reaching agreement on treatment.

Specialists from the Siberian State Medical University (Siberian State Medical University) conducted a study to determine a set of disciplines and topics for training focused on communicating with patients. They also analyzed their demand from both students and teachers.
“»We identified about 20 topics, including topics related to speech etiquette in the communication of a doctor, his communicative tasks, rules and techniques for conflict-free interaction. In the future they can compose the content of a special discipline of this training and the corresponding educational support,” said Alexander Okorokov, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Siberian State Medical University.

The most popular topics among students and teachers were “Speech etiquette and politeness in professional communication with a patient” (82.75% of teachers and 89.4% of students), as well as “General rules and techniques for conflict-free communication with a patient” (81% and 88 ,8%). Next came the topics “The power of a doctor’s word. The main communication tasks of a doctor” (78.2% and 87.2%), “Communication strategies and tactics in doctor-patient communication” (70.7% and 84.8%), “Nonverbal communicative behavior of the doctor” (70.1% and 73.4%), “Verbalization of psychological support for the patient” (69% and 80.8%).

Okorokov added that The study not only summarizes the results of linguistic studies of medical communication and clarifies the essence of the linguistic and professional training of physicians, but also identifies existing models and methods of teaching patient-oriented communication to physicians, and analyzes manuals for physicians.

As a result, university specialists substantiated that training in the field of speech communication, focused on communicating with patients, should be a significant component of university training, based on the principles of the anthropological approach, the ideology of patient-centeredness in medicine, and also include a careful selection of topics training taking into account the results of current scientific achievements.
At this stage, the team will study the reflection of patient-centeredness in the speech aspects of the professional activity of a modern teacher of higher medical and pharmaceutical education.

The study was carried out within the framework of the strategic project «Transformation of medical and pharmaceutical education» development program of the Siberian State Medical University for 2021-2030 («Priority-2030»).
