Archaeologists found a rare coin in Veliky Novgorod

VELIKIY NOVGOROD, December 11 A rare coin of the 10th century was discovered on the Sofia side of Veliky Novgorod, the press service of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

"A rare coin — a silver coin of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich, the baptist of Rus' — was discovered by the Novgorod archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the Sofia side of Veliky Novgorod. This is the second coin of this type found in the entire history of excavations in Novgorod: the silver coin of St. Vladimir was issued for a short time and is mainly found in Southern Rus', on the territory of the Kiev, Chernigov and Pereyaslavl principalities,” the report says.

On one side of the coin there is a picture of a prince sitting in a cloak in a high hat with pendants, in his right hand there is a cross on a long shaft, his left is pressed to his chest. At the left shoulder there is a princely sign — a trident. Above the figure of the prince there is a circular distorted inscription from left to right: “Vladimir and behold him (silver).” On the other side there is a chest-length image of Jesus Christ with the Gospel, to the right and left of it is the inscription “(IC) XC” under the titles.

The coin was made according to the samples of the Byzantine miliaris, belongs to the earliest, first type of silver coins of Vladimir and dates back to the end of the 10th century. According to historians, silver coins of this type are the first silver coin of the Old Russian state, the issue of which was timed to coincide with the baptism of Rus'.

As Peter Gaidukov, deputy director of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said, the production of coins by Vladimir Svyatoslavich and his sons, Svyatopolk and Yaroslav, lasted no more than 30 years.
“Their issues were probably insignificant, and the very attempt of the Russian princes to establish independent minting of specie coins turned out to be a short-term unsuccessful episode in the thousand-year history of the Russian monetary system. But the very fact of minting reflected two fundamental political events in the development of Rus': the formation of the Old Russian state with its center in Kiev and the adoption of Christianity as the state religion,” the institute’s press service quotes him as saying.
The coin was discovered during excavations in December related to the reconstruction of the “Naval Center of Captain N. G. Varukhin.” Archaeologists began work here in the spring. During this time, six birch bark letters and 12 hanging seals were found, among which was the seal of Prince Yaroslav Yaroslavich, brother of Alexander Nevsky. It was here that denarii of the archbishops of Cologne from the mid-13th century were discovered for the first time in Novgorod.
The thickness of the cultural layer in the excavation reaches seven meters, and the collection of objects found here numbers about 1.5 thousand individual finds from ferrous and non-ferrous metals, amber, glass, stone, clay, and various organic materials.
