Finland has decided to open the Vaalimaa and Niirala checkpoints on the border with Russia

Finland has decided to open two checkpoints on the eastern border — Vaalimaa and Niirala, the country's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Interior Minister Marie Rantanen said at a briefing, Yle agency reports.

On the Russian side, these are automobile checkpoints Torfyanovka in the Leningrad region and Vyartsilya in Karelia, respectively. According to Rantanen, the decision will be valid until January 14, 2024. If the situation with refugees changes, the border could be “quickly closed” again, the head of the Finnish police emphasized.

The decision to open the checkpoints was made unanimously. Finnish Border Guard spokesman Mikko Lehmus explained to reporters that in this way people living on both sides of the border will be able to visit their relatives. In addition, these points are best suited for “diplomatic and cargo transport.”

The previous decision on the two-week closure of all border points on the border with Russia will end on December 14, the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

Due to a large flow of asylum seekers, Finland on November 18 closed four automobile checkpoints on the border with Russia. Already on November 22, the country's Prime Minister announced the closure of all checkpoints on the border with Russia, except for the northern “Raya-Joosepi” in the Murmansk region. On November 28, authorities temporarily closed it too.
