The Commission of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Dagestan when surveying the coast In the Caspian Sea, about 130 carcasses of Red Book Caspian seals were found, the press service of the department informed.
According to experts, there are few fresh carcasses, mostly those that have long since decomposed. It is not a fact that they died in Dagestan. The current and storm could have brought it from Azerbaijan or Iran, experts say.
A year ago, about 2.5 thousand seal carcasses were discovered on the shores of the Caspian Sea in the republic. The regional Ministry of Natural Resources then stated that the death of mammals was caused by “natural factors.” Scientists have reportedly discovered avian influenza in the bodies of dead animals.
For various reasons, about ten thousand Caspian seals die annually. Possible reasons for the decrease in numbers are habitat pollution, global climate change, death of animals in nets during illegal fishing, etc.
