Power-ON specialists assessed the prospects for the development of the electric vehicle industry

In recent decades, the automotive industry around the world has faced serious challenges dictated by the environmental agenda. However, an electric vehicle cannot replace the automobile without a thorough overhaul of the entire transportation system. First of all, we are talking, of course, about the appropriate infrastructure.

It should be noted that electric vehicles themselves and all the infrastructure associated with them have been developing rapidly in recent years. In 2022 alone, global sales of electric cars increased by 40% and exceeded 4,500,000 units. The range of modern models with electric engines exceeds 200-300 km, and ultra-fast stations can charge cars in ten minutes. However, the prospects for the development of electric vehicles largely depend on how quickly cities are provided with a sufficient number of portable and commercial charging stations. But there are other important factors influencing progress.

Charging station industry: what measures are being taken?

For stable operation and distribution of electric transport, the Russian government is promoting a pilot project to increase the number of charging stations in cities and regions of the country. Now 45 regions are already involved in it. In 2024, their number should increase to 67. Of course, the more stations are built, the stronger the incentive to purchase an electric car, and it is important that the stations should be distributed not only in the capital region, but also in other regions of the Russian Federation. This dictates the need to involve new regions in the project to increase charging stations. You can read more about charging installations and their types here.

Availability: you can’t do without support

The cost of an electric vehicle is one of the key factors influencing the development of the electric transport industry. Electric versions were and remain more expensive than versions of the same car with a classic internal combustion engine, but positive trends are emerging here: electric cars are gradually becoming cheaper, and their availability is correspondingly higher. These indicators are closely interrelated, and the logic here is simple: the more electric cars there are, the lower their prices in the future. But it’s too early to talk about affordable prices (as well as the availability of middle-class cars in general), so special support measures are required. The government is taking measures to provide financial support for the purchase of electric cars — on credit or leasing. In addition, there are discounts on some domestic electric vehicles.

Ecology: stake for enthusiasts

We all know that electric cars do not emit toxic gases into the atmosphere and do not pollute the environment (unless, of course, you think about their production and battery disposal issues). But is this a significant incentive to buy? No not always. More often, potential buyers are attracted by the technology of electric vehicles, the lack of the need to spend money on gasoline or diesel fuel, and the desire to join the advanced part of the population. Well, for example, Europeans simply have nowhere to go: in the Old World, cars with internal combustion engines are slowly becoming a thing of the past under pressure from environmentalists. In both Europe and America, the “green” agenda really has a significant impact on the development of electric transport. Our situation is a little different, and when buying an electric car, they think about the environment much less often than about its capabilities from a technical point of view. Therefore, most likely, the growth in popularity of electric vehicles in our market will not be intense. And the emphasis will have to be placed not so much on enthusiasts of “clean” transport, but on subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles. So far it’s working: the number of electric vehicles is gradually growing not only throughout the world in general, but also in Russia in particular.
