MOSCOW, December 21 The production volume of Iwasi sardines at the end of 2023 is set for a record and is estimated at 550 thousand tons, 2 times higher than in 2022, fish processors and Against the backdrop of such active fishing, retail should take a closer look at a similar herring substitute, German Zverev, president of the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE), said at a briefing.
“One of the important trends that has developed in the industry is the record catch of ivashi this year, I think by the end of the year we will reach 550 thousand tons, this is twice as much as last year and 10 times more than 7 years ago «, said the head of VARPE.
In his opinion, the industry is returning to the realities of the second half of the eighties, when from the mid-70s herring catches began to decline from peak levels, and then the salvation for the domestic market was precisely the production of Ivasi sardines in the Far East — essentially a substitute product.
In this regard, Zverev recalled, a number of measures were taken in the Soviet Union to promote Ivasi on the domestic market, and due to subsidies for manufacturers, the cost of the special ambassador was almost halved, to 2 rubles per 950 grams. “And then ivashi simply became a phenomenon of consumption, so it would be good if fish processors and retailers would take great interest in this product and in its promotion,” Zverev said.
According to Rosrybolovstvo, by November 15, Far Eastern fishermen had caught more than 428 thousand tons of Ivasi sardines — 88% higher than last year’s level. In connection with the active Iwasi fishing, the volume of its recommended catch in the South Kuril zone was increased by 400 thousand tons — the permitted (possible) catch increased to 884 thousand tons.
