MOSCOW, December 24 The West should stop trying talk to Russia from a position of strength, otherwise there is a risk of repeating the mistakes of the past, writes the American magazine Responsible Statecraft.
«We should remember history and not try to speak in order to humiliate and suppress <…> with the country, in order to avoid the emergence of a conflict» , says the author of the article.
He notes that as the conflict continues in the West, there is fatigue from helping Kiev, and presidential candidate Donald Trump, if re-elected, generally promises to end the confrontation in one day. Nevertheless, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky took an irreconcilable position on the issue of negotiations, although time is not on Kyiv’s side. But the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not go according to plan and did not end as expected. Ukraine depends on the help of the West, and no one can guarantee exactly how strong its obligations are, the publication writes.
The West made a mistake in trying to communicate with Russia from a position of strength, since it will lead to lasting peace and stability only a sincere attempt to create a global balance of power that would take into account the realities of the modern world, the author concludes.
The Kremlin has repeatedly emphasized that it has never abandoned dialogue with Kiev. But, as presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted, now there are no prerequisites for this, since movement towards peace is absolutely excluded by both Kiev and the collective West. According to him, the situation can move into a peaceful direction only if the de facto situation and new realities are taken into account, and all Moscow’s demands are well known.
