MOSCOW, December 21. SSMU scientists tested a new gel formula for the treatment of periodontitis. According to the researchers, the experiment proved the anti-inflammatory and healing effect of alginate gel with tannic acid on the affected areas. The results of the work were presented in the publication «Pathological Physiology and Experimental Therapy».
According to official WHO statistics, at least 45 percent of the world's population suffers from oral diseases, while residents of the European region are most susceptible to periodontal pathology.
Oral diseases are often caused by inflammatory processes. The most common disease is caries, followed by periodontitis, said specialists from the Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky (SSMU). The disease is a lesion of several components of the supporting apparatus of the teeth, including the bony alveoli and gums. Experts noted that lack of treatment in patients with periodontitis leads to tooth loss.
Scientists tested on experimental animals a drug that reduces the activity of the inflammatory process and accelerates the recovery of affected areas. The gel formula includes silver nanoparticles and tannic acid, a component present in many berries, nuts and spices, but mainly entering the human body from tea, wine and coffee.

“Loading tannic acid into microcapsules makes it possible to increase the effectiveness of the gel not only in reducing local inflammatory phenomena in the periodontium, but also in correcting systemic dysfunction of the endothelium. After using the gel in the bloodstream of experimental animals, a decrease in the concentration of substances — markers of vascular damage was observed,” said co-author of the study, head of the Central Research Laboratory of SSMU Alexey Ivanov.
According to him, the results of this study open up new prospects modernization of periodontal treatment using the therapeutic effects of tannins.
The work was carried out within the framework of the state task of the Ministry of Health of Russia «Development and pathogenetic substantiation of the use of a system of prolonged release of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory substances for the correction of microcirculatory disorders in experimental periodontitis.»
