ANKARA, January 1Turkey expects to begin discussions with Russia on the roadmap for a gas hub in Turkey at the end of January or beginning of February; the parties have a working spirit, an informed source in Ankara said.
“Gazprom and Turkey have agreed to prepare a roadmap for the Turkish gas hub, it will be adopted in the near future, and implementation of the project could begin in 2024, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reported.
“Approximately from the end of January to the beginning of February,” the agency’s interlocutor said in response to a request to comment on the timing of the start of discussions with the Russian side of the “road map.”
People first started talking about a Turkish gas hub in October 2022. Then, two weeks after the terrorist attack on Nord Stream, Russian President Vladimir Putin put forward the idea of moving the lost volume of Russian gas transit to the Black Sea region. According to him, it is possible to create a gas hub in Turkey, which would become a platform for supplies to other countries, primarily to Europe, as well as for determining gas prices.
In November of this year, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said that Ankara is negotiating with Gazprom to bring the Turkish gas trading platform to the international level. According to him, the republic expects to be able to complete work on creating an electronic platform for gas trading in 2024.
