Russians eat more than a fifth of the world's tangerine exports

MOSCOW, January 6Russia became the most “tangerine” country in the first nine months of 2023 — it accounted for more than 20% of world imports of these citrus fruits, or 406 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the Russian Federation is also the leader in the import of tangerines, and the United States took second place, calculated on the basis of open data and data provided to the Rusprodsoyuz agency.
So, in the total volume of tangerine imports in the world for the nine months of last year, which exceeded 1.8 million tons, Russia took 21% with 406 thousand tons.

At the same time, the second place in the number of tangerines purchased, with a noticeable gap from Russia, was taken by the United States, which accounted for 13% of world imports, or 242 thousand tons. Next came Great Britain — 8% (or 153 thousand tons) and France — 7% (or 138 thousand tons). Germany, which imported 107 thousand tons of these citrus fruits (7%) closes the top five countries that buy tangerines more than others.

In monetary terms, Russia and the United States also became leaders in the import of tangerines, purchasing them in the nine months of 2023 for $421 million and $396 million, respectively. At the same time, the Russian Federation increased volumes by 8.4% over the year, while the United States reduced volumes by almost 22%. Third place went to France, which imported citrus fruits worth $240 million, which is 28% more than the figures for the first nine months of 2022. The top 5 tangerine lovers also include Great Britain and Germany, which bought fruits worth $203 million (+1.5%) and $196 million (+7.5%), respectively.
In addition, the top ten largest economies purchasing tangerines included Indonesia ($137 million), China and Canada ($81 million each), Poland ($74 million) and Hong Kong ($57 million). Among them, import volumes grew the most over the year in Hong Kong — by 35.4%, and the least in Poland — by 6.1%.
