MOSCOW, January 9Rostechnadzor has authorized the construction of nuclear reactors for new units 7 and 8 of the Leningrad NPP, which means it is possible to start the main stage of construction and installation work at the power units under construction, reported the Rosenergoatom concern (the electric power division of the state corporation Rosatom).
«Rosenergoatom received licenses from Rostekhnadzor for the construction of nuclear installations of new power units No. 7 and No. 8 of the Leningrad NPP. These documents launch the main stage of construction and installation work at the power units under construction,» the message says.
“In the next few years, one and a half hundred buildings and structures will have to be erected at the site of future power units, filled with equipment, laid all the necessary communications and commissioning work, so that already in 2029 and 2031, fresh nuclear fuel and fuel will be loaded into the reactors of power units 7 and 8 begin physical start-ups. For this stage, the Leningrad NPP will need to obtain two more licenses — for the operation of nuclear installations,» notes Rosenergoatom.
Power units No. 7 and No. 8 of Leningrad NPP with advanced reactors VVER-1200 will be built to replace the RBMK-1000 units of the Leningrad NPP. The new units will not only save the required volume of electricity for the needs of North-West Russia, but also increase it by 20%. Every year, each new unit will transmit almost 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to the country's energy system. According to the plan, over 50 years of design operation, the two power units will collectively generate more than 850 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This will not only make it possible to guarantee the provision of light and heat to the residents of the region, but also to successfully continue the implementation of large regional investment projects.
Units No. 7 and No. 8 of the Leningrad NPP are planned to be put into commercial operation in 2030 and 2032.
