MOSCOW, January 10 The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow does not comment on the case of FSB officers receiving a bribe from the rector of the Catholic Church of St. Louis on Malaya Lubyanka.
Colonels Evgeny Lobanov and Denis Karmanov were charged under Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (receiving a bribe on an especially large scale), the punishment for which carries up to 15 years in prison. Both of them were arrested by decision of the 235th Garrison Military Court. The appeal court has not yet considered the complaint against Karmanov. According to investigators, they received money from the priest, promising to “contribute” to the adoption of a certain court decision in his favor.
““I can’t comment, I don’t have enough information,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
Previously, the archdiocese was involved in legal proceedings over the return to believers of the Church of Peter and Paul on Milyutinsky Lane and adjacent buildings.
In August 2023, the Supreme Court of Russia decided not to review the judicial acts of two lower authorities, which refused to the Affordable Housing company, which demanded to recover 931 million rubles from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow . In 2016, the archdiocese filed a claim with the Moscow Arbitration Court against the city property department regarding the return of the Church of Peter and Paul on Milyutinsky Lane and adjacent buildings. This process was won in 2021. However, due to different understandings of the terms of the deal with the organization Affordable Housing LLC, which was leading the process of returning the buildings to the ownership of the Roman Catholic Church, a conflict arose and a lawsuit was filed against the archdiocese.
