CHISINAU, January 10 Ex-vice Minister of Economy of Moldova Yuri Muntean is confident that sustainable economic growth in the republic is impossible under the current government, which discredits the country and its institutions.
«Economy growth of 1.5% is in the zone of statistical error. Real and sustainable economic growth starts from 7-8%, no less. And I don’t see any signs that we can achieve such growth in the foreseeable future under the current government. There cannot be sustainable economic growth in a state ruled by a party that discredits the country and the institutions of this country every day. By definition, in this state of affairs there cannot be growth,» Muntean said on N4 TV channel.
The opposition in Moldova has repeatedly criticized the republican authorities for the rapid rise in the cost of living in the country in the absence of progress in the economy, while payments to ministers have increased, which creates a gap between the salaries of officials and the income level of public sector employees.
In 2022, inflation in Moldova reached a record 30.2%. Since May of the same year, anti-government protests have been taking place in Moldova. The protesters are outraged by the unprecedented increase in prices for gas, other energy resources and food, as well as high inflation and falling living standards. Protesters accuse the authorities of failing to cope with the crisis and point to record inflation over the past 20 years.
