A transgender girl from Russia, Antonina Babkina, committed suicide in a refugee camp in the Netherlands. This was reported by the human rights organization LGBT World Beside.
When exactly she committed suicide is not specified. The girl’s death became known on January 11.
As the publication “That’s So” writes, Babkina flew to the Netherlands on February 27, 2022. After applying for refugee status, the girl reported on her Telegram channel about her depression and problems adapting to a new place.
“After what happened to me, I began to hate the Netherlands. Because I was never restarted on antidepressants, I have withdrawal symptoms. <…> [Organizations for refugees] don’t care that you have a mental disorder, they recognize everyone as healthy and, moreover, they don’t even carry out trivial testing,” the refugee wrote in August 2022; her Telegram channel is now unavailable.
Babkina announced her desire to commit suicide in September 2022. The last entry in her telegram channel, according to “That’s So,” dates back to June 27, 2023.
As LGBT World Beside writes, this is the fifth case of suicide of LGBT people from Russia in Dutch refugee camps. In February 2023, a transgender girl, Hina Zakharova, who had previously reported serious problems receiving hormone replacement therapy, committed suicide in the city of Drachten. In November 2023, Russian Mikhail Zubchenko committed suicide in a camp in the city of Ekht.
